Les enfants de la balle, literally “children of the ball”, a wine bar and brasserie designed by Studio Janréji
The place was created in the 1920s as the mosaic floor, high ceilings, moulding and mirrors can testify. It then got refurbished in the 1950s, when the great formica counter with its copper and all the furniture were introduced. The current owners were able to feel the soul of the place, that emanated underneath the decrepit Portuguese restaurant that existed. They asked Studio Janréji to redesign the site with this idea: “the children of the ball”, children who follow their parents’ footsteps after observing them at work all their youth. That described them just right!
Our approach to the redesign was to make the connection between past, present and future. To preserve and renovate what remained of the 1920s and 1950s, which had marked the place, but to bring in the 2010s by making the changes needed to the functioning of a restaurant nowadays. The facade, the enclosed patio, doors and windows, toilets but mostly the kitchen, were demolished to make way for new items, safety and accessibility standards and practices. A big thank you to the owners who trusted us fully!
